‘Hyper’ means overactive. Therefore, hyperpigmentation occurs when your skin pigment becomes overactive in one particular area of your skin. Sun exposure, along with aging and other physical influences, can create hyperpigmentation on areas of your skin that have received frequent exposure to the sun’s rays. The face, arms and back are typical areas where hyperpigmentation may develop. The discoloration can be brown or grayish in color and the pigmentation can continue to darken with ongoing exposure to the sun.
